EPA Announces Results of First Year Automobile Mercury Switch Recovery Program (09/2007)
EPA issued a report announcing the results of the first year of the National Vehicle Mercury Switch Recovery Program, indicating that, since August 2006, over 635,000 switches have been removed from automobiles before they were sent to scrap recyclers for processing. EPA estimates that these recovered switches contained 1,400 pounds of mercury that was removed before it could become part of the waste stream. According to EPA, all 50 states and approximately 5,900 companies that dismantle, crush and shred old vehicles are involved in the switch-recovery program. The program was developed by EPA and eight organizations of states (including the Environmental Council of the States), nongovernmental organizations, steelmakers, vehicle manufacturers, auto recyclers and scrap metal recyclers.
