Vermont Governor's Awards
for Environmental Excellence & Pollution Prevention

The Vermont Governor's Awards for Environmental Excellence and Pollution Prevention were conceived of and established in 1993 to honor Vermont individuals, organizations, institutions, public agencies, businesses, and industry using innovative approaches that reduce or eliminate the generation of pollutants and wastes at the source. The 2006-2007 award winning projects were recently recognized at a State House ceremony.

In 1999, award categories were expanded to specifically recognize the efforts of Teachers and Students to promote and practice pollution prevention. Last year, the number of award categories were again expanded in order to recognize the broader meaning of what it means to preserve and protect the environment. To date, more than 100 award-winning efforts representing environmental excellence and pollution prevention have been recognized.

Eligibility
Applications and Nominations for the Governor's Awards are encouraged from:

  • Business, Industry, and Trade or Professional Organizations,
  • Environmental, Community, and Non-Profit Organizations,
  • Individual Citizens,
  • Institutions (such as schools, hospitals, and municipalities),
  • Teachers and Students,
  • Public Agencies.

To be eligible for consideration, a project must reduce at the source the use, generation or release of pollutants; increase efficiency in the use of raw materials, energy, water, or other resource; or protect natural resources using conservation techniques.

Selection Criteria
Entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges selected by the Agency of Natural Resources’ Environmental Assistance Office (EAO). The panel will include representatives from industry, environmental organizations, academia, and government. Judges will evaluate projects using the following criteria:

  • Benefits to the environment,
  • Use of innovative approaches, techniques, and/or technologies,
  • Level of commitment and leadership in pollution prevention,
  • Ability of program or activity to serve as a model for other efforts,
  • Economic efficiency.

For additional details regarding selection criteria, see the 2006-2007 Governor's Awards brochure.

Application Process
Any Vermonter or Vermont-based organization or facility may apply for a Governor’s Award. Multiple applications (more than one project from the same applicant) are permitted. Each application will be considered separately. Joint applications for collaborative efforts are encouraged.

Nominations by second parties are also encouraged. In such cases, completion of the application could be either the responsibility of the nominating party or the nominee. The nominee, however, must be notified and provide written consent.
